Certificate in Mortgage Advice and Practice (CeMAP)

CeMAP Certificate in Mortgage Advice (Modules 2 & 3)

UK mortgages are regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), so individuals looking to provide mortgage advice legally, must first earn a professional qualification, like the ‘Certificate in Mortgage Advice and Practice’ (CeMAP).

CeMAP is the benchmark qualification for Mortgage Advisers in the UK, held by 80% of Mortgage Advisers.

Is a CeMAP training course right for me?

Completing your CeMAP training and earning your qualification is your 'licence to practice' and is mandatory for Mortgage Advisers in the UK, however, there are no official prerequisites to enrol onto this CeMAP course. We recommend that you first complete CeMAP 1 training, to earn your full licence and be able to work in the industry.

If you’re looking to become a Mortgage Adviser and provide a vital service to home buyers, this course is the best way forward.

After successfully passing the full CeMAP training course, you can either join one of the many practising firms, a bank or work as a self-employed independent Adviser. The choice is yours!

How long does it take to get a CeMAP qualification?

When considering a career change or looking to move into the Mortgage Advice sector, you may ask ‘how long does it take to get a CeMAP qualification?’

We allow 6 months access to this course but most of our students finish our CeMAP 2 and CeMAP 3 course faster than that. There are around 140 hours of learning, so it all depends how much time you have available to dedicate to your studies.

What jobs can I apply for after my CeMAP training?

The CeMAP 2 and CeMAP 3 qualifications are industry-validated certifications, which provide you with the skills and knowledge to practically apply what you have learnt throughout your career as a Mortgage Adviser.

It is a legal requirement to have earned a professional qualification, but once you have completed your CeMAP training, you can apply for jobs as a Mortgage Adviser. Alternatively, you can start your own business in this industry.

If you have not already done so, enrol onto the CeMAP Modules 1 qualification, to earn your full CeMAP qualification, and be able to apply for jobs as a Mortgage Adviser, Protection Adviser, or choose to work within the public or private Banking sectors.

Is this course valid in Scotland?

CeMAP is a widely recognised mortgage qualification that can be studied and practiced in England, Wales and Scotland. While this course is based on the England and Wales syllabus, the Scottish regulatory framework for mortgage advice is closely aligned with the English framework. The slight differences between the English and Scottish modules are specifically in Module 2: Mortgage Advice Procedures, and Module 3: Mortgage Practice Issues. These differences are related to the specific legal and regulatory requirements that apply to mortgage advisors in each country.

Therefore, you can complete this CeMAP course and apply for a Scottish mortgage adviser's license without having to retake any of the modules.

To make sure that you meet the requirements for practicing as a mortgage adviser in Scotland, you should inform the London Institute of Banking & Finance (LIBF) when you register for the CeMAP course that you are a Scottish student. The LIBF will then ensure that you receive the correct course materials and will guide you through the process of applying for a Scottish mortgage adviser's license.
